Scout, the main characater in TKAM, is a 7 year old girl, who has behaviours that of boys. She prefers to do stuff that boys do, and hates to be called a girl, as well as wearing a dress. In the story, she has to tolerate with some situations that she does not agree with.
One example of this is when Cecil Jacob called her father, Atticus, a nigger-lover. Although this angered her, she did not take action and fight with him, as she remembered what Atticus had said. "but do one thing for me if you will:you just hold your head high and keep your fist down". As so, she tolerated with this insult, and did not end up in a fight.
To tolerate with such an insult is a hard thing to do, especially if it is not towards you, but towards your parents. You would definately not let him off, which is why I respect Atticus a lot, as he had told Scout to tolerate in such a situation. He has a very calm mind and knows what he is doing. If I were Scout, I would have landed a fist on him, as he would have made me furious by saying that.
However, why did they descriminate the nigroes? If everyone treated the negroes equally, there was no reason why being a "nigger-lover' was such an insult. In my opinion, i think that nigroes should be treated fairly, and should be given the justice they deserve. We should not be prejudice towards them, but instead treat them the same as we treat others. They are human, afterall.
