Merchant of Venice-Reflection Term 3 ACE

My reflections

In the play, racism was one of the main themes. It was shown in the entire play, where Antonio and friends looked down on Shylock, not respecting him. They named him "devil" , "dog". This was racism, and was what it was like being a jew during that time.

Nowadays, racism still exist in present-day. In every part of the globe, you would be able to find racism. In America, people still look down at the afrcan-americans. And in Singapore, people would look down at one another's race. Calling names such as "Cina" and "Bangala".

I feel that this is unacceptable. In a first-world country, a mordenised country like Singapore and America, this racism should have been removed from our society, but yet it still exist. Everyone deserves there rights, as all are human afterall. Black or white, chinese or indian, they are all human, and they deserve equal rights. Just like the goal of the civil rights movement in the 1950s, we should strive for racial harmony, and maintain peace in our societies. Even though racism is not as serious in the past, where it has caused riots such as the Maria Hertogh Riots. Therefore, I feel that we definately have to maintain racial harmony and prevent racism, or else the consequences would be deadly.

  1. I really agree with you that racism has major implication on society. You can see such consequences from the riots, mass killings etc. I also agree that we should step forward to prevent racism. However, I still do not know what as we, as a student, should do to maintain racial harmony besides doing racial atrocities ourselves. Maybe you could give me a little insight?
