Singapore SSS Draft 3

The Japanese Military Army was just too inferior. They were invading Singapore, and all of us knew that they were too strong to fight. Yet, we would not give up, we had nothing to lose! Our loyalty for the country was far greater than our life.

I was a General of the Singaporean Army, and I was proud to be one! We prepared intensely for the arrival of the Japanese, and were mentally prepared for the worst. We stocked up on food and resources as we waited for them, at our base which was located at the foot of Bukit Timah hill. Our rifles were armed, each stocked with 3 magazines. This was all we had. Time past as slow as a rainy day, and what seemed like 5 long hours was only one.

However, it was soon midnight. The leaves of trees were rustling and the echoes of the owls and bats were heard. Trees were everywhere and this made it different from a warzone. However, we had the advantage as we had trained in these harsh conditions. Suddenly, footsteps could be heard, not far from the base. This meant that they were near. We took cover behind the deep trenches, not to be spotted by them, and prepared ourself. However, what we saw was not expected. They had us outnumbered by 10 is to 1. But we would stand our ground and fight to the end. We had to protect our country, and would die for it if we had to. We were Singaporeans.

As they approached nearer, we opened fire. The battle of Bukit Timah hill has begun. Gunshots could be heard from miles away. The noise was so loud, my ears were turning deaf. The battle was a very tiresome one, where both sides suffered great loss, however, the Japanese still manage to pull through. We were no match for them, we were defeated!

I was captured and frogmarched back to their detention, which was located at Changi. It was a long, and trencherous journey, but I eventually made it. Upon arrival, I was tossed into a cell, which was so cramped-packed with other people accused of being anti-Japanese. The place seemed like hell, no food, no water. The conditions were even worse as the pungent smell of dead bodies was in the air. It was so unbearable, living in such an evironment was almost impossible. I asked one of the people why there were so many dead bodies. His reply in a very stern voice," These people died during interrogation. They were brought back to bring fear to us!" This place was the beginning of the end, and I wondered how many years I would live in such a horrific location.

Every single day, without fail, the Japanese would interrogate us. However, I never replied them. I could never betray my country. But their response to this was terrible, especially because I knew I would happen every single day. The Japanese were ruthless, and seemed to enjoy turturing us. It was as if dying was a better option. I could not stand it, it was driving me crazy. But I knew I had, and what helped me survived was that I wanted revenge against the Japanese. I would form my very own Anti-Japanese organisation and help defeat the Japanese. But I did not get my hopes high of surviving, as I relised that after one year of detention, most of the cell members were dead, and replaced by new ones. This made me relise that maybe the torture was too great that dying was the only solution. However, I would survive!

Somehow I knew I was going to stay alive. My will power to do so was so great, that I would be able to live on no matter what sort of torture I went through. Finally, the breakthrough came, after 3 gruesome years of torture. The Japanese were forced to surrender, and I finally acheived freedom. I have obtained my life, once more!

I never regretted this because I am a Singaporean. I love my country and my heart belongs to my home, my Singapore!
