This story is mainly on the theme 'change and adaption'. It is about a village boy who has a dysfunctional family. His father is always drunk, his mother is ill, and he has to take the role of the adult, doing what an adult should do. Then, it was said that the government would build many factories in Thul, the village by the sea, where Hari lived.Although everyone was excited about the factories as they may get job, Hari could not stop but worry that his life would change forever, that he might not even get a job, and that all the land and crops would be destroyed because of the factories.
He was sick and tired of all of this. So, when he had the chance, which was when many the village fishermen went to the big city to protest against the building of the factories, Hari decided to not return to Thul but to find a job in Bombay. He first looked for the De Silva family, which he worked for when they went to Thul for the holidays. They were very rich and lived in a condomenium, something that Hari could never imagine living in. To his dismay, the family went back to Thul, at the same time Hari went to Bombay.
Luckily, the watchman of the condomenium pitied him and took him to his friend, Jagu, which gave him food, shelter and one rupee a day if he worked for him in his restuarant. He also learnt watchmending from the watchman next to the restuarant.
In Thul, Hari's sister, Lila, had also received help. This time, from the De Silva family. The family had sent Hari's mother to the hospital, which was impossible to walk to for Lila. When Hari's father found out, he immediately rushed to the hospital. He has turned over a new leaf.
One day before Dewali, Hari went back to thul. His family was together again. His mother was well. His father has stopped drinking and they have reunited again. He then told his plans tohis family. That he plans to have a watchmending shop to fix the watches of those who come from the city to work in the factories and that he plans to have a poultry farm.
Hari was a lucky boy. He might have been jobless when he went to Thul. His mother may not have had the chance to go to the hospital and his father might not have stopped drinking. Hari had learnt to change and adapt.
